Why does the washer say the door is open when it is shut?

A sock or sleeve caught at the seal can keep the latch from engaging. Clear the seal and close the door again. Check the seal folds for stray items too.

Can I start with the door ajar?

No. The washer will not run until it senses a closed door, so the water and the drum stay safely contained. That keeps the water and the drum safely contained.
