What 249 means

On Fisher & Paykel AquaSmart top-load washers, code 249 is a Smart Pump timeout: the pump ran, but the water level did not change. The washer expected the level to rise or fall and it stayed the same, so it gave up. The owner sees the cycle stop with 249 and either too much or too little water in the tub.

Common causes of 249

  • Pump not moving water because of a blockage or jam
  • Drain hose kinked or the drain line backed up
  • Pressure sensor not reporting the level change
  • Pump drive not working
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the washer and wait two minutes. 2. Check the drain hose for kinks and make sure it is seated in the standpipe without being pushed down too far. 3. Check whether the household sink next to it drains normally. 4. Run a drain-and-spin only and watch the level.

! Why to stop there
  • No level change can come from the pump, the hose, the household drain or the sensor, so the cause has to be narrowed first
  • Guessing at the part risks paying twice
  • We tell you the price in writing before work and our repairs have a 30-day warranty
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

249249 questions
Why does the washer say the water level did not change?

The control watches the level while the pump runs. If the reading stays the same for too long, it assumes the pump is not working and stops the cycle with 249.

Could my house drain be the cause?

Yes, a partly clogged standpipe or laundry sink drain can keep water from leaving. Check how the nearby sink drains before blaming the washer.

Is it okay to bail the water out and try again?

Yes, with the washer unplugged. Remove water with a cup, straighten the hose and try a drain-and-spin. If 249 repeats, the cause is inside the machine.
