On Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive Phase 2 to 6 top-load washers such as the GWL11 and GWL15, code 54 is a motor and Motor Control Module step failure. The module attempted a motor step test, found that the motor did not step to the correct position, and detected that there is no current. That points to a motor that is not connected or is open circuit. The owner sees 54 at the start of the cycle.
1. Unplug the washer for several minutes. 2. Check that the basket moves freely by hand. 3. Plug in and try one empty cycle. 4. If 54 returns, leave the washer off and call us.
The module sent a signal to move the motor and did not see electricity flow. Either the motor is not connected, it is open, or the module did not deliver power.
Low current is not a hazard in itself. The washer simply cannot run, so it stays off until the path is repaired.
A surge can damage the module output, but a loose motor connector can give the same result.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
