What 164 (SmartDrive) means

On Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive top-load washers in Phases 4 to 5, code 164 is a brake function time-out. The motor control module has been braking for 20 seconds. Every spin load should come to rest within 10 seconds, so something has gone wrong in the braking that prevents the bowl stopping in time. The washer shows the number and ends the spin.

Common causes of 164 (SmartDrive)

  • Motor braking not stopping the bowl within the allowed time
  • Motor drive electronics unable to brake properly
  • Mechanical drag or an unbalanced load affecting the spin-down
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the washer off, wait for the drum to stop fully, then unplug it. 2. Remove the clothes and redistribute them so the load is not lopsided. 3. Plug in and run a short spin with a lighter load. 4. If code 164 returns, stop using the washer and call. Never reach into a drum that is still turning.

! Why to stop there
  • A bowl that does not stop in time is a safety matter on a top-loader
  • Brake control sits in the motor drive and needs testing
  • Opening the cabinet needs the drum stopped and power disconnected
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

164 (SmartDrive)164 (SmartDrive) questions
Why 20 seconds?

Spin loads should stop within 10 seconds. If the module has been braking for 20 and the bowl still has not stopped, it raises code 164.

Can an unbalanced load cause this?

It can add strain, so rebalance and try a lighter load. If the code returns, the braking itself needs checking.

Is it safe to keep using it?

We suggest stopping. A bowl that coasts too long is a hazard when the lid is opened. We diagnose, quote in writing, and give a 30-day workmanship warranty.
