What Code 7 means

On Fisher & Paykel SmartLoad and AeroSmart dryers such as the DEGX1, DGGX1, DE27CW1 and DG27CW1, Code 7 means the motor current is excessive. The drive motor is pulling more than it should, which can come from a jam or overload, the motor control module or the motor itself. The display shows the code and the dryer stops to protect itself.

Common causes of Code 7

  • A jammed or overloaded drum making the motor work too hard
  • A motor drawing excess current
  • A motor control module that is not regulating current
  • A seized bearing or binding drive
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch off the dryer's breaker and let it rest for about ten minutes. 2. Remove the load and check that the drum is not stuck on a sock or item. 3. Turn the drum by hand and note whether it moves freely. 4. Restore power and run a small load. If Code 7 returns, stop using the dryer and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • High motor current can overheat windings, so repeated tries risk making the repair larger.
  • Separating a binding drive from a failing control means testing under power.
  • We check the mechanical side first, then the electronics, and give a written price before work begins.
  • Our repairs include a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Code 7Code 7 questions
Can overloading alone trigger Code 7?

Yes. A very heavy or tangled load makes the motor draw more current. Dry a lighter load and see if the code clears; if so, the dryer was protecting itself.

How is this different from Code 3?

Code 3 says the drum is stalled and cannot move. Code 7 says the motor is pulling too much current, which may happen before or without a full stall.

Is it a fire risk?

The dryer shuts down to prevent damage, which is what it should do. We still advise against restarting it again and again until the cause is found.
