What 221 means

Code 221 on Fisher & Paykel AquaSmart/EcoSmart top-load washers, including the WA37T26EW and WA42T26GW, is a Motor Control Module error from the RAM check. At power-up and during operation the module tests its working memory, and this code means that test did not pass. The washer shows 221 and will not carry on with the cycle. Nothing in the tub is damaged.

Common causes of 221

  • Motor Control Module working memory failed its self-test
  • Power interruption or surge that disturbed the module
  • Motor Control Module needs replacement
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn the washer off and switch its breaker off for a full minute. 2. Restore power and let the display start up. 3. Try one short rinse. 4. If 221 shows again, stop and call us; the control module cannot be repaired at home.

! Why to stop there
  • A self-test failure is inside the electronics, where no home check can reach.
  • Repeated restarting can hide a worsening board.
  • We quote in writing first and give a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

221221 questions
What is a RAM check?

It is the control's own test of its working memory. When the module finds that memory unreliable, it reports 221 and refuses to run. A failed memory test is never a hose or filter problem.

Could a power surge cause 221?

A surge can upset a control, and a restart may then clear it. If the code comes back after the reset, the module itself needs attention.

Will I lose my saved settings?

A repair may reset cycle preferences to default. We tell you what we find and the price before we change any part. Bring up any special settings you rely on when we visit.
