On early Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive Phase 1 top-load washers, code 34 means the circuit that controls braking of the motor is not working correctly. The washer cannot slow the basket in the usual way. The owner sees 34 on the display and the basket may coast too long after a spin, or the washer may stop the cycle to protect itself.
1. Unplug the washer and wait five minutes. 2. Keep hands and anything else away from the basket until it has fully stopped. 3. Plug in and run an empty spin cycle once, watching whether the basket slows normally. 4. If 34 returns, do not run spin cycles and call us.
A spinning basket that does not slow can still be moving when you reach in, so do not open the lid until it is fully stopped.
You may be able to wash and drain, but avoid spin until the braking is checked.
This meaning belongs to the early Phase 1 design. Later phases use other codes for motor and control problems.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
