Code 8 on Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive Phase 1 top-load washers means the Display Module micro was unable to start up correctly. The small processor on the display did not boot, so the washer could not begin normal operation. This code belongs to the earliest SmartDrive phase and appears on older machines only. It stops the washer before any cycle can start.
1. Unplug the washer or turn off its breaker for one minute. 2. Restore power and press the power button. 3. Wait for the display to start. 4. If 8 returns each time, stop and call us with the model number.
It is the small processor on the display module that runs the buttons and screen. Code 8 says it failed to start correctly. It starts first, whenever power is applied.
It is listed for SmartDrive Phase 1, the earliest generation, so it is mostly seen on older washers. Older machines of that generation are where it turns up.
If the display cannot start, the buttons will not help. A power reset is the only safe step. Only a power reset helps, and a repeat means a new display is needed.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
