What Code 16 means

On original E-series ActiveSmart refrigerators like the E522BLXFDU, Code 16 means the PC (fresh food) fan draws more current than expected. Its wiring is shorted, or the fan has failed and is dragging. You may hear a grinding or squeal near the fresh food section. The LCD with spanner or a beep and LED pattern shows the code. A squeal or grinding may come with it.

Common causes of Code 16

  • Fan motor jammed or dragging
  • Short in the fan wiring
  • Ice or debris touching the fan blades
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the unit for five minutes and restart. 2. Check that nothing sits against the fresh food vents. 3. Note any grinding noise and tell us when you call. 4. If Code 16 returns, leave it and call us. Do not poke anything into the vents.

! Why to stop there
  • A dragging fan can burn out and take the connector with it.
  • The fan assembly is sealed behind a panel.
  • We test the fan and wiring, then quote in writing.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Code 16Code 16 questions
What does high current mean for a fan?

A fan working against friction or a short pulls more power than normal. The control notices and sets Code 16. The noise helps us decide which fan is the problem.

Could ice block the fan?

Yes, ice or debris touching the blades can cause drag. Clearing it from behind a panel is a technician job. We look at the fan wiring and the motor in turn.

Is the freezer affected?

It has its own fan, so it may be fine. We check both while there, and give a written price first. We replace only what actually failed.
