What Code 1 means

On original E-series Fisher & Paykel ActiveSmart refrigerators such as the E522BRXFDU and E522BLXFDU, Code 1 means the power module failed its self test at the last power-up. Ice & Water models show the number on the LCD with a spanner symbol; other units signal it with beeps or an LED pattern. Cooling and controls may be unreliable. Cooling may not start properly after the check fails.

Common causes of Code 1

  • Power module that failed its startup check
  • Power interruption or surge right before the check
  • Damaged module after a prior electrical event
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the refrigerator for five minutes, then plug it back in. 2. Watch whether the display or LED pattern shows the code again. 3. Keep doors closed to hold the cold. 4. If Code 1 returns, move perishables to another cooler and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • The power module controls everything in the cabinet, so a bad one cannot be worked around.
  • Repeated power cycling can leave food warm while the module keeps failing.
  • We confirm the module is the cause and quote it in writing before ordering.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Code 1Code 1 questions
Can a power outage cause Code 1?

A surge or outage just before startup can trip it once. If unplugging for five minutes clears it and it stays away, no repair is needed. Moving food to a cooler is the wise choice if the code stays on.

Will my food spoil?

The cabinet stays cold for several hours if doors stay shut. If Code 1 returns, move food to a cooler early and call us the same day.

What is the usual repair?

A power module replacement. We give you the price in writing first and stand behind the work with a 30-day workmanship warranty. Parts are ordered only after you have approved the written price.
