Boil-Overs on a Fisher & Paykel Induction Range: Spill Safety and Cleanup

A pot that boils over on an induction range does not behave like one on gas. Learn what to do in the first minute and what to avoid afterward.

Induction surfaces stay cooler than gas flames or coil elements, which gives many homeowners a false sense of security when a pot of pasta foams over. The spill still matters, and so does how you respond.

What to do right away

  1. Turn the zone off at the control, then remove the pot with dry oven mitts.
  2. Let liquid cool before wiping. Sugary spills can harden and are easier to lift while still slightly warm, but not hot.
  3. Wipe with a soft cloth and a little glass-safe cleaner, then dry the surface.

Where liquid can cause real trouble

Spills that run to the edge of the glass, or into the seam between the cooktop and the countertop, are the ones to watch. Moisture working its way beneath the surface can reach the electronics that drive the zones. A range is also a heavy appliance with a lot going on in the cabinet below.

  • Do not spray cleaner directly onto the controls.
  • Do not use a razor scraper at a steep angle, which can chip the glass.
  • Do not keep cooking if liquid has pooled around a control panel.

When to stop and call

If a code appears on the display after a spill, if the controls respond slowly, or if a zone keeps beeping with no pan in place, switch the range off at the breaker and let it dry out. Do not keep pressing buttons hoping it clears. Water inside a power circuit is a safety matter as well as a repair.

It also helps to think about cookware. A pot filled too high is the usual cause of boil-overs, and a pan that sits slightly off center on the zone heats unevenly and foams sooner.

When you would rather have a technician look it over, schedule through our range repair page. We confirm the arrival window in the morning, afternoon or early evening, quote in writing before any part is replaced, and back the work for thirty days.
