What Code 40 means

On Fisher & Paykel ActiveSmart Ice & Water refrigerators like the E522BRXFDU, Code 40 means solenoid transistor 1 on the controller has shorted. The transistor that drives the ice maker solenoid failed, possibly because of a problem with the solenoid. Ice making stops, and the LCD shows the code. A shorted driver might also leave the valve open, so watch for water at unusual moments or for ice frozen into one lump in the tray.

Common causes of Code 40

  • Controller transistor driving the solenoid shorted
  • Solenoid resistance out of range
  • Broken wiring to the solenoid
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the unit for five minutes and restart. 2. Close the water valve behind the refrigerator if water seems to run on its own. 3. Do not open any covers. 4. If Code 40 returns, call us. Dry any water you find, and tell us about it when you call.

! Why to stop there
  • A shorted driver can leave the valve energized.
  • The control module and solenoid need testing together.
  • We check solenoid resistance and wiring, then quote the module in writing.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Code 40Code 40 questions
Why would water run on its own?

A shorted transistor can keep the valve on. Close the water supply if you see that. The driver is part of the control module. Ask us about the repair on the visit.

Was the solenoid the cause?

Possibly. A bad solenoid can overload and destroy the transistor, so we test both. A solenoid in poor shape can overload the driver, so we test it as well.

What is replaced?

The control module, and the solenoid if it is out of range. The price is in writing first, with a 30-day workmanship warranty. The control and any valve are replaced only after you approve the price.
