On original E-series ActiveSmart refrigerators like the E522BLXU, Code 18 means the FC (freezer) fan draws more current than expected. The wiring is shorted, or the fan has failed. The freezer fan runs over the evaporator, so a seizing fan can leave the freezer warm. The code shows on the LCD with a spanner or as beeps and LEDs. Warm air in the freezer may follow.
1. Unplug the unit for five minutes and restart. 2. Listen for scraping from the freezer rear wall. 3. Keep the freezer door closed and watch food temperature. 4. If Code 18 returns, unplug and call us. Do not chip at any ice you find.
Ice built up behind the freezer panel can touch the blades, making the fan drag and draw extra current. It lives behind the freezer back wall. Check it soon.
If you hear scraping or smell hot plastic, unplug and move food to a cooler. A fan that scrapes or squeals is a clue for us, so tell us what you hear.
We find why the fan is drawing too much and repair it. You get a written price first and a 30-day workmanship warranty. Our technicians clear ice, test the motor and replace only what is needed.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
