What Code 8 means

On original E-series ActiveSmart refrigerators like the E522BLXFDU, Code 8 means the evaporator (defrost) sensor resistance is outside the normal range, this time below 660 ohms, which points to a short. The control cannot read the coil temperature, so defrost may run too often or not at all. The LCD or beep pattern shows the code. Defrost timing can go wrong as a result.

Common causes of Code 8

  • Evaporator sensor shorted internally
  • Wire insulation worn through near the sensor
  • Moisture at the sensor plug
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the refrigerator for five minutes, then plug it in again. 2. Check that the freezer vents are clear of food. 3. Keep doors closed and note any frost you see. 4. If Code 8 reappears, call us. Avoid scraping at any frost you see.

! Why to stop there
  • The evaporator area is sealed behind panels and has live heater wiring nearby.
  • A shorted sensor can cause defrost to misfire and warm the cabinet.
  • We test the sensor and quote in writing before replacing anything.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Code 8Code 8 questions
What is the difference from Code 7?

Code 7 means the evaporator sensor reads high, above 45K ohms. Code 8 means it reads low, under 660 ohms. The sensor is the same; the failure type differs.

Will the freezer stay cold?

Usually for a while, but defrost can misbehave, so frost or warm spots may follow. Check food often. Defrost cycles may also trigger too often, which warms the freezer between runs.

Who should replace the sensor?

A technician. It sits next to the evaporator and heater wiring, so we handle it and give you the price in writing first. The wiring sits near live heater parts, so it is not a job for owners to try.
