Pulling Your Fisher & Paykel Refrigerator Out of the Wall Safely: Water Line, Cord and Floor

Moving a refrigerator for cleaning, flooring or a remodel is risky for the floor, the water line and you. Follow these steps to do it safely.

Many homeowners need to pull a refrigerator forward for new flooring, deep cleaning or a countertop project. Done carelessly, this can crack a water line, scar the floor or injure your back.

Before you move anything

  • Empty the unit or at least remove heavy items and shelf contents.
  • Unplug the cord, and keep it where it will not be pinched or run over.
  • Close the water shut-off valve if there is an ice maker or dispenser.
  • Measure the path. Doors, hallways and cabinet openings are tighter than they look.

Moving it

  • Use two people and a proper appliance dolly. Do not try it alone.
  • Protect the floor with a hard board or cardboard, and avoid dragging the unit across tile or wood.
  • Pull straight out, slowly, watching the water line so it does not kink or pull from its fitting.
  • Never tilt the refrigerator more than necessary, and keep it upright in transit if you can.

Putting it back

  • Check the water line for kinks and tighten any fitting by hand, then check for drips after you reopen the valve.
  • Level the refrigerator using the front feet or rollers so the doors close properly.
  • Leave the recommended gap behind and beside it for airflow.
  • Wait before plugging in if the unit was laid down or tilted heavily. Waiting lets the oil settle.

Watch for trouble afterward

After the move, check for leaks around the base for a day or two, listen for unusual noises, and confirm the temperatures settle normally. A built-in or column model may need special care and trim removal, so ask us if you are unsure.

If something does not seem right afterward, see our refrigerator repair information and the areas we cover. Every job is priced in writing first and carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.
