Why the Glass Stays Hot: Understanding Residual Heat on a Fisher & Paykel Cooktop

The surface may look safe long after cooking ends. Here is what the hot-surface indicator is for and how to protect children, pets and your hands.

Even an induction cooktop, which heats the pan rather than the glass, can leave the surface warm. The heat travels from the hot pan into the glass, and it takes a while to leave. Gas-on-glass and electric models hold heat even longer.

What the indicator is telling you

When a zone shows an indicator light or symbol after you turn it off, the glass above it is still hot enough to burn. The light stays on until the area has cooled to a safe level. Never rely on touch to find out.

Safe habits in a busy kitchen

  • Keep cutting boards, plastic containers and cloth off the cooktop, even when it seems off.
  • Do not set hot lids directly on the glass; a sudden temperature change can stress it.
  • Wipe spills only once the indicator has gone out.
  • Remind guests during parties that the surface remains hot.

If the indicator stays on too long

A light that lingers well after the glass feels cool, or one that never turns on while the surface is hot, deserves attention. It can mean a sensor or a connection on the control board is not reporting correctly. That matters because the indicator is your warning system.

  1. Turn every zone off and let the cooktop rest for an hour.
  2. Switch the cooktop off at its breaker briefly, then restore power.
  3. If the light still misbehaves, stop relying on it and schedule an inspection.

Pets and curious toddlers

Cats love warm spots. If you have one, try pulling a cover over the cooktop once it has fully cooled, and keep stools away from the counter edge.
