Fridge Smell That Won’t Go Away? Cleaning Your Fisher & Paykel Refrigerator Properly

A lingering odor in a refrigerator usually hides in a drain, a gasket fold or a drip pan. A thorough cleaning routine often solves it without a repair.

You emptied the shelves, wiped everything down, and the smell is still there. Odors in a refrigerator often come from places a quick wipe never reaches, especially in a humid Houston kitchen.

Start with the food

Check the back of every shelf and drawer for forgotten containers, leaky packages and produce gone soft. Raw meat packaging that has dripped is a common hidden source.

The hidden spots

  • Gasket folds: pull the door seal gently and wipe inside the folds with warm water and a little mild soap, then dry thoroughly.
  • Drawers and shelf rails: remove them and wash in the sink, not in the dishwasher unless the manual allows it.
  • The drain at the back of the fresh food section: clear it with a soft cleaning tool and warm water so meltwater does not sit.
  • The drip pan under or behind the unit, if your model has an accessible one.

What to avoid

Skip bleach, harsh scented sprays and abrasive pads. They can leave smells of their own and scratch the interior. A mix of baking soda and warm water is safer and works well on most surfaces.

Keeping it fresh

  • Store strong foods in sealed containers.
  • Wipe spills as they happen.
  • Replace the water filter on schedule.
  • Leave the door closed as much as possible during humid weather.

When it might not be cleaning

A sharp chemical or burning odor is different from a food smell. If you notice one, unplug the refrigerator and call us. Also call if the smell appears alongside warm temperatures, since spoiled food can make a bad problem worse.

When the odor traces back to a clogged drain or a failing seal, our refrigerator repair team can fix it. Check the service area list, and expect a written price and a 30-day workmanship warranty.
